Changing the Game: Taking Advantage of Eureka Moments and Other Creative Ways for Nonprofits to Approach the Economic Crisis

The Challenge
Tough economic times combined with malfeasance, fear and distrust have created a risky environment for non-profit organizations. The Washington Post reports that as many as 100,000 non-profits may close their doors by the end of 2009, and countless others will lay off staff, trim plans and cut services. When our country needs the work of nonprofits the most, their ability to help communities is eroding at an alarming rate.
But this crisis also opens new space for creativity. Non-profit leaders have an opportunity to rethink, renew and rebuild. Unfortunately a lot of the advice leaders are getting – increase revenue, reduce expenses, improve operations - is not all that helpful.
It is time to approach the crisis differently.
Defining a New Perspective
Crecer Strategies and Milo Public Affairs are hosting an event at the Case Foundation that will bring together experts in interactive technology, business development, management, funding and leadership to discuss new and creative strategies for helping non-profits thrive.
The conversation will explore questions such as:
• What’s a Eureka Moment? How can organizations generate new ideas and new support during this crisis?
• How can nonprofits share resources or develop capacity with other like-minded groups?
• Should you acquire assets from organizations that are going out of business?
• It is better to hunker down or be bold? How would an organization decide?
• How can leaders use interactive strategies to meet needs, generate income or decrease costs?
