Case in Point
Combining data, narrative and visual elements to create a compelling story...
Imagine that you are doing research in a city with a long history of racial and class tension. In the wake of a natural disaster, the city and the public school system are in the midst of radical change and tensions are mounting. You have a compliation of resources, a set of interview notes and a list of possible connections, many of which are changing daily. Your task is to turn that information into something that matters—to tell a coherent story about what is happening and make recommendations about how to move forward.
This is the task we faced at Collaborative Communications Group as we worked with the National Academy Foundation (NAF) to understand the rapidly evolving education environment in New Orleans, post hurricane Katrina. Our job was to discern what was relevant to the Foundation as it worked to develop a new presence in New Orleans' high schools.
Ultimately, we developed a report that combined data, narrative and visual elements to map the intersection of emerging relationships and resources in New Orleans. The report was effective because it enabled NAF to "see" how connections overlapped, to assess risks, and to determine where and how they might invest strategically.
